Dr. DataBeats has a passion for making music accessible and fun for all.
/ Who is this guy, anyway?
Joe Thaler has been developing software independently for over 20 years, and just a few short years ago began creating software for live music.
In early 2023, Joe brought an early version of a MIDI (digital music) controller demonstration to Josh Dunigan, known to Joe at the time as his kids’ music teacher. The two quickly identified mutual interests and passions for sharing accessible and fun music experiences with others. Josh invited him to his freshly minted monthly drumming experience at a place called Sacred Springs, and introduced Joe to the local drum circle community.
Since then, Joe has significantly expanded the capabilities of the Digital Music Playland to include a full Digital Audio Workstation with looping, support for dozens of MIDI controllers, video game controllers, custom LED visualizations and much more!
Now also known as Dr. DataBeats, Joe has joined Josh Dunigan at many community events across West Michigan, from World of Winter’s Paint the Park to Fallasburg Arts Festival, and weeks at Heartside Park in downtown Grand Rapids. Independently, Joe was also seen at Art Prize 2024 at Canal Park, and has done interactive presentations for area schools with groups of 10 to 25 kids.
